Air Force finalizes PT uniform design; will begin the production process > Air Force > Item Display

After extensive testing and feedback from Airmen around the world, the Air Force Uniform Bureau has finalized the design of the new Physical Training Uniform, or PTG, and is preparing to begin the production process.

This is the first update to the PT uniform in more than 16 years, and more than 150 Airmen have participated in the uniform trial.

“Our main requirement (from Air Force leadership) was to develop a PT uniform that people really wanted to wear that was as good as, if not better than, commercially available athletic apparel,” said Air Force uniform bureau chief Tracy Roan. which is aligned under the Human Systems Division of the Agile Combat Support Directorate. “The new uniform now includes all of the great performance features you find in sportswear today.”

In addition to improving performance, the uniform is designed to meet various sporting interests.

“In the past, there was one uniform for all athletic activities, whether you were running, playing basketball or lifting weights,” said Col. Paul Burger, 88th Wing Mission Support Group Commander. from the air base, one of the test participants and an official with the Air Force Marathon. “The approach the Air Force has now taken is to develop a uniform for runners or racing only and a better designed uniform for some of these other sporting activities.”

Along with the new gear, Airmen will be issued a jacket, pants, T-shirt and shorts.

The set will have upgraded fabrics that include soft, quick-drying material and antimicrobial technology that helps control moisture and odor.

Other significant changes include the design of the jacket.

“With the ‘notorious’ track jacket, we’ve made updates to the fabric to minimize the noise it makes during workouts,” said Second Lieutenant Maverick Wilhite, uniform office program manager for the PT equipment. “The jacket will be more stylish, so instead of having a bulky jacket, you will have a fitted and tailored design. Additionally, the jacket will have a zippered chest pocket to hold things like your CAC (Common Access Card) .

The training set will include two variants of shorts; a shorter running style and longer versatile shorts. The versatile shorts are unlined knit with zippered hip pockets that you can close. The running shorts are a lightweight stretch woven fabric with mesh side panels to improve airflow and an improved stretch lining for added modesty. The performance shirt is designed to be taken off during workouts or tucked in depending on the order requirements.

Overall, the entire PTG uniform has an updated style with stretchy materials to provide comfort and increase performance.

The new uniform will be available to airmen in 2022, and there will be a four-year transition period for mandatory wear.
