Desktop Metal Qualifies Commercially Pure Copper for Production System

Desktop Metal has qualified commercially pure copper for use with its production system, allowing parts requiring conductivity – such as liquid cooling plates (above) – to be manufactured as a single component (courtesy Desktop Metal permission)

Desktop Metal, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, has qualified C10300, commercially pure copper with a purity greater than 99.95%, for use on the Production System ™ platform, which uses Single Pass Jetting ™ (SPJ ) of the company, a form of Binder Jetting (BJT) technology. Due to the excellent thermal and electrical conductivity of copper, this addition is expected to expand the scope of SPJ technology to the production of high-performance parts on a large scale in a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace and electronics.

“Copper is a material in high demand by many customers and prospects, and has applications spanning a wide variety of industries, from thermal material found in air and liquid cooling systems to conformally cooled coils for the transmission of high frequency currents, ”said Jonah Myerberg, co-founder and CTO. “We are excited to be able to expand our extensive portfolio of production system materials to help customers looking to 3D print electrically and thermally conductive components on a large scale and at a fraction of the cost of conventional manufacturing methods. “

One application promoted by the company is the additive manufacturing of liquid cooling plates, used to regulate temperatures on high performance microprocessors. While traditional production methods require that parts be made from multiple components, BJT technology employed by the production system constructs the plates as one-off parts. This allows hundreds of cooling plates to be additively manufactured per day, now from a material that is believed to maximize heat dissipation from the microchip to the coolant.

In addition to cooling plates, commercially pure copper is known to be an ideal material for any application that requires heat or power transfer, such as washers and manifolds, heat sinks, heat exchangers, and bus bars used. in energy intensive electrical applications.
