Doosan Enerbility begins production of small modular reactors

Doosan Enerbility, formerly Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, will start production of small modular reactors (SMRs) in cooperation with NuScale Power of the United States.

The company announced on April 25 that it has signed an agreement to start large-scale production of NuScale Power Modules (NPM), a single integrated unit that integrates all components for steam generation and heat exchange.

A signing ceremony was held at the Doosan Tower in Seoul attended by Park Ji-won, President of Doosan Enerbility, and John Hopkins, President of NuScale Power.

Under the agreement, Doosan Enerbility will begin manufacturing NPMs to be supplied to NuScale Power’s Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) project in Idaho, USA. NuScale Power plans to complete UAMPS in 2029.

Doosan Enerbility plans to start manufacturing large casting and forging materials used for SMR production in the second half of 2022 and start producing SMRs in earnest in the second half of 2023.

Doosan Energy has invested US$138 million for a stake in NuScale Power with Korean investors. In 2019, he received an order for an SMR manufacturability review service from NuScale Power and completed it in January 2021. He is currently producing a prototype.

A NuScale Power SMR consists of up to 12 modules, which are 77 MW per unit, it can generate up to 924 MW. NuScale Power passed a design certification review by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2020 for the first time among SMR models.
