Furukawa Automotive Systems Inc. (Headquarters: Inukami-gun, Shiga Prefecture; Chairman: Shigenobu Abe), a member of Furukawa Electrical Group, has developed a new model “MMR2” perimeter surveillance radar that offers significantly increased performance as a perimeter surveillance radar, a critical component of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) required in next-generation vehicles. Mass production of the new MMR2 radar has begun for Mazda’s new CX-60 crossover SUV announced in Japan in April this year.
Background
In recent years, increased awareness of vehicle safety has led to the increased installation of ADAS sensors in new vehicle models, and our company’s perimeter surveillance radar is already fitted as standard in the Mazda CX- 5. Within these trends, the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) and the NCAPs of each country have added new elements such as intersection assistance and reversing pedestrian protection as part of the protection measures vulnerable road users, and the level of safety evaluation criteria are also increasing. At the same time, in order to ensure the safety of increasingly complex electronically controlled components, it is necessary that even perimeter surveillance radars comply with international standards for functional safety and cybersecurity of vehicles when installed in new vehicle models. However, when equipping the radar, it is often necessary to modify the design of the vehicle and the shape of the bumper depending on where the perimeter surveillance radar is installed.
Details
A new 24 GHz (ISM band) “MMR2” perimeter surveillance radar has been developed and mass production has begun. This new radar was developed using model-based design (MBD) in which development and verification took place simultaneously. It complies with the ISO26262 international standard for vehicle functional safety and the ISO/SAE 21434 international standard for vehicle cybersecurity. Currently, it has been adopted for use in the new Mazda CX-60 crossover SUV announced in Japan in April this year.
Because the MMR2 has improved compliance for NCAP and new applications, it offers a wider detection range than previous models, and speed detection accuracy and spatial recognition performance have been improved. The radar units are intended for installation at all four corners of the vehicle, enabling a wide range of detection applications, including frontal collisions, when turning right or left at an intersection, when changing lane, when the vehicle is stopped and general driving conditions. The volume and weight of the radar block have been reduced by approximately 30%, allowing installation on the inner side of the bumper.
Our 24 GHz perimeter surveillance radar has excellent characteristics, including low transmission loss when passing through the bumper and a small size that minimizes the impact on vehicle design and hardware considerations. Additionally, since the radar is not significantly affected by rain, snow, or dirt, it provides solid performance in all weather conditions.
Furukawa AS will continue to advance the development of perimeter surveillance radar applications, promote the use of perimeter surveillance radar in a wide range of vehicles including automobiles, and contribute to creating a safer society through the further application of this technology.
