Turns out it’s the perfect time to be a Pinocchio fan! In addition to Disney’s live-action adaptationwhich recently premiered on Disney+, famed director Guillermo del Toro working on another adaptation for netflix.
The form of water the writer shared a behind-the-scenes look at his upcoming film, which hits Netflix in December, during the Saturday, September 4 streamer Tudum Fan Eventand the film’s intricate part-stop-motion, part-CGI production looks incredible.
The two-minute feature expertly flashes between shots that show the puppeteers at work on set versus the final product, proving that the magic of the film is real.
del Toro himself spoke about the process onscreen, proudly introducing, “That’s my Pinocchio.”
Time-lapse footage showed crew members building a platform that would hold part of the set as the director continued, “To me, there’s a valuable difference between stop-motion as a form of art and the digital. He explained how the “imperfection” of early stop-motion was what made it so special. “And I really wanted this movie to land in a way that had the expressiveness and the material nature of a piece of hand-made animation, a fine craft exercise in sculpting, painting, sculpting, but it had the sophistication of movement that platforming research and puppet making have brought us. ”

It’s an amazing look at the minute, even tedious processes of an art form rarely seen these days, not to mention utterly enchanting to hear del Toro speak so proudly about the project.
He then showed off one of four different sized puppets they used to get all the shots they needed – a very tall Pinocchio used to get the close-ups with the cricket – as well as a Pinocchio who had little near the waist of the tip of his finger, at which he chuckled in pleasure.
