Lhyfe and DORIS will install a hydrogen production system

Lhyfe, a company specializing in the production of renewable green hydrogen, and DORIS, an offshore engineering company, have joined forces in an offshore hydrogen production project.

Lhyfe and DORIS plan to launch the first floating wind turbine to be integrated into a hydrogen production system and identify larger scale opportunities for their solutions.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding by the two companies comes just a few weeks after the Bouin de Lhyfe production site in Vendée started producing the first hundred kilos per day of carbon-free green hydrogen.

“The operational insights gained from this world first will be used to finalize the development of DORIS and Lhyfe’s proprietary Nerehyd solution,” the two companies said.

“This proprietary product combines Lhyfe’s expertise in green renewable hydrogen production with DORIS Nerewind’s floating wind turbine solution. The Nerehyd solution, which integrates a hydrogen production facility into the float of a wind turbine, could be deployed for on-grid or off-grid applications, from small-scale 10-megawatt wind turbines to large-scale wind farms with a capacity of several hundred megawatts,” the companies said.

According to a press release published on Monday, the budget for the project – including R&D and the production of the first prototype, expected in 2025 – will be around 60 million euros.

The objectives of the two partners are to: Finalize the design of the solution; Overcome the main technical and economic obstacles; Develop and fund a pilot project; Identify target projects for industrial-scale deployment.

Xavier Grandiaud, The Executive Deputy Managing Director of DORIS Engineering said: “While we have no doubt that the production of green hydrogen on earth will be the first step in a large-scale global development, we strongly believe in the need to move quickly towards offshore to meet the high demand to come, which will require a huge amount of electricity.

“With Lhyfe, we believe that offshore production will be the best way to successfully produce large quantities of green hydrogen without impacting terrestrial landscapes or relying on an existing grid connection. Our NerehydTM solution is the tool perfect for large-scale, sustainable and economically viable production of green hydrogen. With Lhyfe, we now have all the keys in hand to make Nerehyd a success.”

Matthieu Guesne, CEO and Founder of Lhyfe added: “We are delighted to be moving forward on our projects with DORIS. At Lhyfe, the reason we set up our first production site near the ocean was to start producing under offshore, because from day one we have We are certain of one thing: offshore is the key to the massive development of renewable hydrogen We see more and more offshore wind farms and traditional players are keen to find ways to scale their infrastructure and solutions, so we are very optimistic about the development of this sector and strive to offer a range of solutions to adapt to each situation”.

In addition to the joint development of Nerehyd, which is at the heart of the partnership, Lhyfe and DORIS will also explore the possibility of extending the collaboration to other types of offshore hydrogen production solutions.
