TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An automated fish farming system developed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has won a 2021 Future Tech Award from Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
According to the introduction of the invention, the system saves 60% labor and 40% production cost, and increases the seedling selection rate by 10 times to 3-5% compared to traditional breeding methods. One of the main features of the system is its complete automation in the detection of fish fry size, water quality and the production of suitable food such as algae and food organisms.

Chen Tzong-yueh (陳宗嶽), chairman of NCKU’s department of biotechnology and bioindustry science and leader of the interdisciplinary development team, said traditional methods of fish farming require three to four people to work. take care of a single livestock farm. Currently, a photoelectric company has signed an agreement, while three other companies are in talks to transfer the technology of the intelligent fish farming production system, according to NCKU.
MOST’s Future Tech Awards receive submissions from industrial and academic nominees across all disciplines and highlight “scientific breakthrough” and “industrial applicability”.
