NCKU Develops Award-Winning “Intelligent Fish Farming Production System” | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An automated fish farming system developed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has won a 2021 Future Tech Award from Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

According to the introduction of the invention, the system saves 60% labor and 40% production cost, and increases the seedling selection rate by 10 times to 3-5% compared to traditional breeding methods. One of the main features of the system is its complete automation in the detection of fish fry size, water quality and the production of suitable food such as algae and food organisms.

By entrusting the task of analyzing complex data to an intelligent system and enabling it to make and execute decisions, not only can the intelligent processing platform come up with much better breeding plans and redefine various breeding standards. farming, but provide a solution to the aging and shrinking population of aquaculture workers, according to product information.

Chen Tzong-yueh (陳宗嶽), chairman of NCKU’s department of biotechnology and bioindustry science and leader of the interdisciplinary development team, said traditional methods of fish farming require three to four people to work. take care of a single livestock farm. However, with the smart production system, one person can control three to four farms and do so from a phone.

Additionally, the smart farming system moves farms indoors, allowing farmers to work in air-conditioned environments. With the learning curve now much less daunting for newcomers, the industry can become more attractive to younger generations, thereby ensuring industrial sustainability, Chen said.

Currently, a photoelectric company has signed an agreement, while three other companies are in talks to transfer the technology of the intelligent fish farming production system, according to NCKU.

MOST’s Future Tech Awards receive submissions from industrial and academic nominees across all disciplines and highlight “scientific breakthrough” and “industrial applicability”. This year, MOST received more than 500 applications, 100 of which were awarded and exhibited at the Taiwan Innotech Exhibition.
