Nexcharge launches mass production of lithium-ion batteries in Gujarat

Nexcharge, a joint venture between India’s Exide Industries Limited and Switzerland’s Leclanché SA, today announced the inauguration of its new manufacturing facility at Prantij in Gujarat. The company’s new state-of-the-art, fully-automated manufacturing plant spans 6,10,098 square feet and is said to be the largest in India for the production of lithium-ion battery packs and modules.

The company claims to have invested more than Rs 250 crore in this manufacturing unit. The facility has six fully automated assembly lines and test labs with an installed capacity of 1.5 GWh. It will address a diverse segment of transport and utility related industries and serve as energy storage systems for the Indian electric vehicle market and grid-based applications.

Since commencing operations in India in 2018, Nexcharge has been striving to realize its vision of accelerating India’s transformation towards sustainable energy solutions. At present, the company offers battery packs for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, personal and commercial packs in commercial transport and telecommunications units, inverters, inverter battery packs, etc. Nexcharge also relies on a state-of-the-art in-house R&D center in Bangalore.

Speaking on the development, Stefan Louis, CEO and CTO of Nexcharge, said, “Nexcharge is in accelerated mode to cater to various segments of the transportation industry and utility markets with Li-ion batteries from different chemistries assembled at our plant in Prantij.We have invested over Rs 250 Crores in setting up this state-of-the-art facility with emphasis on technology driven innovations which is in line with our investment commitment and long term plans in India.

Surender Narula, President of Nexcharge, added, “Our current product line is extensive and our new production lines give us the flexibility to assemble products of different sizes and designs. We can now manufacture batteries from 3V to 1000V with sizes varying from 10 centimeters to 2 meters. Our production setup is divided into three sections – module assembly has 3 production lines for cylindrical, ladle and prismatic cell assembly. As new technologies emerge, we will maintain our position of providing cutting-edge technology.
