Offshore company in South Africa studies early production system

VANCOUVER – TotalEnergies and its partners in block 11B/12B offshore South Africa are evaluating the feasibility of an early gas/condensate production system.

According to one of the partners, Africa Energy, this could be designed for progressive field development across the Paddavissie Fairway, starting with the deepwater discovery of Luiperd last October.

Jan Maier, Vice President Exploration at Africa Energy, said: “The accelerated development schedule could significantly reduce the capital expenditure required to achieve first production from Block 11B/12B, which has infrastructure and of a nearby gas demand.

“The development…will have positive implications for South Africa’s economy and will be key to facilitating the country’s energy transition away from coal to a domestic supply of natural gas.”

Block 11B/12B lies in the Outeniqua Basin 175 km (109 mi) off the southern coast of South Africa, in water depths ranging from 200 to 1,800 m (656 to 5,905 ft). ). The Paddavissie Fairway in the southwest corner of the block includes Luiperd and Brulpadda’s game-opening discovery, with hints of a prolific oil system.

The five original subsea prospects identified in the channel all have direct indicators of hydrocarbons which have been recorded on 2D and 3D seismic data and intersected in the two wells drilled to date.

The joint venture plans to apply for a production right before the exploration right expires in September 2022.
