Astress Yara Shahidi elevates its efforts to bring diverse narratives to television and film. According Deadlinethe 7th Sun Productions founder has extended her contract with ABC Signature.
Launched in 2020, the Blackish the star co-founded the production company with her mother Keri Shahidi. The business has been cultivated to amplify the voices of underrepresented groups through storytelling. After unveiling 7th Sun Productions, the mother-daughter duo announced they have signed a deal with ABC Studios to produce projects on streaming services, broadcast and cable platforms.
As part of the extended pact, Shahidi’s company will partner with the Onyx collective to develop television projects. The production company has a team of innovative storytellers who use their artistry to transform the world of entertainment, including Erika Green Swafford, Ryan Coogler and Natasha Rothwell.

Black women use television production as a way to reclaim their stories and provide an authentic perspective on culture. Last year, actress, writer and producer Natasha Rothwell signed a deal with ABC Signature through her company Big Hattie Productions. “It was important to me to find a studio partner who would not only honor my vision and voice as a storyteller, but also one who would share my thirst for stories that expand the limited scope with which BIPOCs have traditionally been seen – stories where our humanity is not a plot or a debate, but is understood, celebrated and explored in new and interesting ways”, said Rothwell.
