Sony’s PlayStation Virtual Reality (PSVR) 2 headset may not be ready for the market this year. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks Sony’s next-generation VR headset could now launch in early 2023.
On Twitterreputable analyst Kuo has broken down what he thinks is the current PSVR 2 landscape. According to Kuo, his sources say PSVR 2 will enter mass production in the second half of 2022. The initial supply order would be d ‘about 1.5 million units.
With that in mind, Kuo says Sony “could launch it into [Q1] 2023.” Kuo suggests that this time frame also depends on the development schedule of the hardware launch titles.

My latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and several component suppliers of PS VR2 will begin mass production with around 1.5 million units shipping in 2H22. Sony could launch it in 1Q23, depending on the development schedule for PS VR2 game titles. pic.twitter.com/NIqFgg4Kjl— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 30, 2022
Kuo reviews a few other notable bits of information. For example, the PSVR 2 has optical modules. This will mark an upgrade from the original PSVR headset, which was not. Now, Sony’s hardware has six optical modules. Four of them are 720P IR cameras and two are for eye tracking. Genius would be the primary lens supplier.
Kuo generally has a good finger on the pulse of the industry. His insight usually lends itself well to analyzing Apple’s upcoming devices and announcements. However, his supply chain sources probably have a good idea of where Sony’s PSVR 2 may be in production.
However, Kuo has already been wrong in his predictions. That said, Kuo isn’t the first analyst to predict that Sony might delay the PSVR 2 launch until 2023. Ross Young previously predicted the same. However, VR screen shipments are on the rise.
Sony might find itself able to start selling the PSVR 2 before the holiday season. Given the current landscape of supply chain and software development hurdles, it’s best to tread carefully and set expectations accordingly.
