Revol Greens doubles its romaine production capacity

Revol Greens has announced that it will double production of romaine lettuce through the remainder of 2022 and into 2023. The notable production increase is supported by Revol Greens’ innovative indoor growing facilities in Minnesota, California and Georgia, as well as a new 20- acre facility in Temple, Texas.

Revol Green’s increase in romaine lettuce production is largely due to its new 20-acre Advanced Greenhouse in Temple, Texas, which will produce more than 17 million pounds of greens per year after the end of the phase 2. While doubling its production of romaine lettuce, Revol Greens’ indoor greenhouses continue to use significantly less water and land than field-grown lettuce. Revol Greens’ new facility adopts the industry’s most advanced greenhouse technology and growing methods, using 90% less water than traditional field-grown greens, water-based irrigation UV-sterilized rain and snowmelt and long-lasting sunlight.

Romaine lettuce continues to account for more than 25% of salad and lettuce category sales in grocery and foodservice stores, but supply volatility related to the INSV virus and recalls of romaine lettuce due to disease-causing food have challenged the industry. The Revol Greens program can be an alternative to reduce supply risk due to these factors by growing in a protected and controlled environment using advanced growing methods and sustainable greenhouse technology. The brand also uses proprietary organic plant-fed nutrient sources, eliminating the need to use nitrates found in animal waste and significantly reducing the risk of crop cross-contamination.

“A key aspect of our mission at Revol Greens is to offer a diverse product assortment that meets the needs of a complex product supply chain,” says Tom Thompson, chief revenue officer at Revol Greens. “Developing programs rooted in organic growing practices, sustainability and local culture will always be at the heart of what we do. Building on this foundation, Revol Greens also offers grocers and foodservice operators an alternative field-grown Roman style and breadth and scale to customers as they seek a greenhouse-protected alternative.”
