Samsung to launch mass production of Micro LED TVs in 3Q22 with AUO and PlayNitride as suppliers

According to South Korean outlet TheElec, Samsung plans to start producing Micro LED TVs in the third quarter of this year. The product will be designed with LTPS-TFT technology. It is also the first Micro LED TV that does not use PCB technology.

In 2022, the South Korean electronics conglomerate aims to roll out 89″, 101″ and 114″ Micro LED TVs. Production of the 89″ model was set to start in May; however, the schedule was delayed due to unsatisfactory performance and the COVID pandemic. The three TVs, with 4K resolution and small size, will all be based on LTPS TFT, allowing them to individually control each discrete circuit.

TheElec also mentioned that the LTPS-TFT panels will be supplied by AUO, while PlayNitride will be the LED supplier. Samsung is also developing the required LTPS-TFT technology, making it a potential supplier of the next-generation technology.

The 89″ TV is said to cost $80,000, with the 101″ and 114″ models costing $90,000 and $100,000 respectively.

As reported by TheElec, producing a small Micro LED TV is more difficult because the smaller size of the LEDs tends to make the mass transfer process more difficult, hence the lower yield. Samsung’s 89″ TV will feature 11.30 million Micro LEDs with a 0.44mm pixel pitch.
