Karachi: The Sindh government has said that an assembly line should be quickly built by potential foreign investors for local manufacturing of buses to meet the public transport needs of major cities like Karachi.
In this regard, Sindh Minister of Information and Transport, Sharjeel Memon, together with relevant officials met with representatives of China’s leading bus manufacturer and their local partners in Pakistan. The Chinese bus manufacturer’s national manager, Paul Zhang, attended the meeting.
Memon asked the future Chinese private investor to finalize its plan within the next three weeks to establish an assembly line for the production of public transport buses.
The meeting was informed that the proposed manufacturing unit would be established on a land of 15 to 18 acres where 500 buses would be manufactured each year. The factory could be built in 16 to 20 months.
The Transport Minister proposed to the participants of the meeting that the Sindh government could become a partner in the proposed manufacturing plant, either through Sindh Bank or Sindh Mass Transit Authority.
He said the option was open to the Chinese bus producer to partner with any potential local company to jointly launch the manufacturing plant.
Memon said the Sindh government can go all the way and is resolved to provide all the necessary facilities to set up such a local manufacturing plant as soon as possible.
He assured the participants of the meeting that there was no delay from the Sindh government as they wanted the project to get off the ground at the earliest.
He said the Sindh government is ready to provide guarantees that whichever political party forms the next government after next year’s general elections will be bound to fully support the project.
Memon said that the Sindh government has been working to launch a modern transport system in all major cities in the province. He said the availability of a local assembly line would ensure the provision of quality buses to passengers at the lowest fares.
He told the meeting that talks were also underway with the World Bank to bring public buses to citizens.
He said the Sindh government has been working on the plan to bring thousands of buses to Karachi.
He mentioned that the Sindh Chief Minister had recently sanctioned the release of Rs 1.5 billion for road repairs, which were part of various routes of the newly launched People’s Bus Service in Karachi. Roads have recently been damaged due to heavy rains in the city.
