Spartans like Monte McNearney kept the Newport Grizzlies from scoring for most of the traditional rival game last Friday. The Sparts snapped their losing streak and secured a 29-6 win.

Group to play game UI

The Priest River High School band will attend the annual band day at the University of Idaho in Moscow on Sept. 29 and play in the U. of I. football game against Idaho State College. Many high school groups from across the state will participate.

Luby Bay Mill destroyed

A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Luby Bay Lumber Co. plant on Thursday morning. The fire was discovered by Roy Crunk, who sent the alarm. Forest Service firefighters arrived with their new fire truck 15 minutes after being called and were able to stop the blaze from spreading.

80 years ago — 1942

Burned by killing weeds

High school students Erling Storro, Evan Peterson, George Daggett, Lawrence Denton, Alvin Baker and Bobby Caprai helped save the life of Bill Zachesky, who was burned using a flame weed killer. The pressure tank he was carrying on his back leaked and saturated his clothes with gasoline. When his gloves caught fire, Zachesky rubbed them against his overalls. Covered in flames, he panicked and ran. When Zachesky disregarded the boys’ warning to stop, they knocked him down, extinguished the flames, and summed up Dr. Stauffer,
