Tom Cruise details the difficult production process of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Tom Cruise and the cast and crew of the upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick discussed various elements of their intense training process in a behind-the-scenes video. In the clip shared on Tom Cruise’s Instagram, the actor and his castmates were seen flying in fighter jets as they worked on the long-awaited sequel to the hit 1986 action drama.

Cruise noted that he and the film crew wanted to kick off the project by producing a strong script. “I wasn’t ready to do a sequel until we had a special sequel-worthy story,” he said. The performer also noted that he and Top Gun: Maverick delayed working on the sequel until “technology evolves so we can get a deeper experience of a fighter pilot.”

Cruise went on to point out the intense training the film’s cast went through during the project’s production process. He recalled that “we worked with the Navy and Top Gun School to formulate how to shoot practically because if we’re going to do it, we’re going to be flying F-18s.” At one point, several actors were seen working with Navy service members in aquatic practice sessions that involved performers placed in a rotating device and held underwater.

Cast member Greg Tarzan Davis said, “It’s intense. You are flipped, inverted and you have to try to get out. Video of Top Gun: Maverick cast members moving from plane to plane was also shown, and many of the actors seemed excited at the prospect of performing in the air. “Everyone thought it would be impossible for actors to really be in the jets, but that’s the gift Tom gave us,” he said.

Cruise concluded by stating, “I am very proud of what we have all accomplished. Each of them is extraordinary. The next film has been in the works for several years and is currently scheduled for its world premiere later this month. Top Gun: Maverick is set to have its world premiere at CinemaCon on April 28th, and it will be released widely in the United States on May 27th.
