KJ Apa and Isabel May were recently tapped for the lead roles, but it’s now reported that the project is no longer in the works.
HBO Max may not be moving forward with The Wonderful Twins after all. In February, it was reported that Adam Sztykiel had been hired by Warner Bros. to direct a live-action film for HBO Max based on The Wonderful Twins. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey have also been signed to produce, and it was announced last month that KJ Apa (Riverdale) and Isabelle May (1883) would star as the titular sibling superheroes.
According to This hashtag show, a new update on the project brings bad news for those involved. The cast and crew would have been told that The Wonderful Twins was shelved without any clear reason as to why it was suddenly cancelled. The apparent plan was to begin filming in Atlanta on July 5, and news of the cancellation comes as the filmmakers were still fleshing out the rest of the cast. The recent Warner Bros./Discovery merger is cited as a possible reason for the cancellation, but nothing has been confirmed.
The Wonder Twins were originally introduced in the anime series The All New Super Friends Hour, though they later head to the printed page with DC Comics stories. Twin siblings from another planet, Zan and Jayna have unusual powers that can be activated when both fists strike and say, “Wonder Twin powers, activate!” Jayna can transform into animals while Zan can take on the different forms of water. All the while, they are accompanied by a pet monkey named Gleek, who can help facilitate the twins’ powers when they are out of each other’s reach. There’s a lot of creative potential for a live-action adaptation, but maybe it wasn’t meant to be.
The Wonder Twins was supposed to air on HBO Max
Warner Bros. has been working on a selection of movies and shows that will be released exclusively on HBO Max separately from their theatrical releases. Following the release of The Batman, there are two spinoff shows in the works, one following Colin Farrell’s Penguin and the other taking place at Arkham Asylum. The DCEU will also continue to expand with films like bat girl scheduled to release on the streaming service. While The Wonderful Twins has been canceled, there’s no word yet on any big changes related to Warner Bros. other superhero projects.
HBO Max also hosted The Suicide Squadthe series derived from Peacemaker with John Cena in the lead role. Michael B. Jordan is also reportedly working on a Val-Zod Superman movie for the streamer. Fans are also anticipating new seasons of hit DC shows like Doom Patrol, harley quinnand Titans. However, not all shows based on DC Comics characters will have the chance to move forward, as batman just got canceled at The CW with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Who knows if we’ll ever see the Wonder Twins live-action make their way to the DCEU, but for now, it looks like their planned solo movie is on the shelf.
